What does that mean - planning a road trip.Īs the crow flies, the most direct route is would be the same as a write amp of 1.0īecause your car doesn't fly - the route isn't direct. This is far lower than other controllers. In a worst case scenario - 100% incompressible data - the write amp was still under 3. We have posted data from years of real world use in our own operation and typically the write amp is LESS than 1. [ The way the Sandforce controller operates - the write amplification of these drives - without any external TRIM - are by far among the lowest in the industry.

CINDORI’S TRIM ENABLER FOR MAC

Our drives we've been building for Mac first since day one and it is a true benefit that no TRIM hack is needed to get the most from them in your Mac. There is a reason though why our Extreme Pros are great for Black Magic cameras, for example, and most of the other drives simply can't provide the data throughput consistency required. We want peaks too though - the pretty benchmark numbers that are easiest to show off and explain. but that said, the current drives actually are already faster for many of the critical functions than the OS/systems they go into can benefit from. I won't lie - it's frustrating to have had to endure the delays for being able to commercially provide the next generation Sandforce processor based solutions. a consistent performance above those outside of the peak ends. we lose at peaks - but those are 'bathtub peaks' vs. And about benchmarks - real world duty testing has shown that our drive design also gives consistently strong performance. Sandforce/LSI does a great job without needing TRIM. Under extreme corner case benchmark testing, yes - there are circumstances where even our drives can be shown to relatively momentary benefit from OS side trim - but they aren't real world/real app. No - our drives do not need TRIM to operate optimally

CINDORI’S TRIM ENABLER UPDATE

Everytime a new OS update comes out - this breaks the hack and have to redo. the TRIM hack makes the OS see a non-Apple drive like it's an Apple drive and enable TRIM as an Apple SSD. It's frustrating to need any hack to use a drive. Write-amplification from garbage-collection without TRIM will shorten the lifespan of your SSD. TRIM can certainly speed up access to your SSD by reducing overhead from unnecessary garbage collection and wear-leveling, but it also extends the life of an SSD.įlash memory has a limited capacity for write-operations. Sometimes, there are other bottlenecks that end up being far more important. I'd just like to see some real-world tests that support the supposition. I believe all of you that say TRIM should be the better way to go. I'm not seeing why you would not want to have something enabled that can extend the life of your drive. If you don't understand how TRIM complements garbage collection, I'm guessing you may want to bone up on what the terms mean exactly. TRIM happens in addition to firmware-based garbage collection- it's not an either-or. I'd like to see some recent data comparing these firmware and TRIM solutions. OWC has some real-world data showing no significant speed reduction in their SSDs over a 3 year time-period. Since larger amounts of over provisioning will improve SSD performance, this increased dynamic over provisioning helps as well. Second, the pages of data that are now freed up will automatically turn into "dynamic" over provisioning. This speeds up the garbage collection process. First, TRIM tells the SSD to stop tracking invalid data during garbage collection. the performance gain after TRIM comes from two places. TRIM can only make the GC process more efficient and lower the write amplification. GC is not a replacement for TRIM regardless of foreground or background type. TRIM identifies what the OS no longer wants to save, but nothing changes on the SSD until the GC process actually recycles that block of pages and skips the TRIMed invalid data.ġ2. A 128GB SSD with TRIM and only 64GB of user data will operate like an SSD with 64GB of over provisioning, meaning it will operate at its fastest level.ġ1.

Only the TRIM command can identify the invalid data and improve performance.ġ0.

Garbage collection without TRIM will always be moving all invalid data during the GC process acting like the SSD is operating at full capacity. Some will benefit more than others depending upon their situation.ĩ. The SSD cannot tell what files have been deleted until the OS uses the same sectors to store new files, but by that time the SSD has already wasted cycles by garbage collecting data that was invalid, but known to the SSD.ĥ. The TRIM command is sent by the OS to the SSD to identify what pages of data can be ignored during garbage collection. Not sure this is a big deal unless you have an older SSD. OWC includes garbage collection in its firmware, as do many other name-brand SSD manufacturers.
